Building a simple wardrobe when you wear 3XL and up

Capsule wardrobe flat lay of folded t-shirts, a polo and chinos

Choice is limited above 2XL, so the trick is to buy fewer pieces that work with each other rather than chasing whatever happens to be available in your size.

Start with three colours

Black, navy and grey will carry almost any combination. Add one warmer tone such as olive or maroon once the basics are covered. Every piece then works with every pair of trousers you own.

Get the length right first

A shirt that is long enough changes the whole silhouette. Anything that rides up at the back will look wrong regardless of colour or fabric, which is why we treat body length as a measurement rather than an afterthought.

One collar in the mix

A single polo shifts an outfit from casual to presentable without changing anything else. Keep one in a plain dark colour and it will cover most occasions that a t-shirt cannot.
